e.Mail & The Internet (3)

Once you have chosen your e.mail supplier, it's time to go into some detail with Outlook Express, and setting it up so it will send and receive your mail.

Open Outlook Express Click on 'Outlook Express' from either your desktop or via the 'Start', 'All Programs' icons.

Remember, if you have just installed anti-virus software like Symantec's 'Norton', Outlook Express will have to configure itself with Norton Anti-Spam first. This is done automatically and after configuring, Outlook Express will re-open itself.

Once open you will be presented with the first page which for new users will contain a welcome message from Microsoft, which you should read, the bin (highlight, then click 'delete).

Click on tools Click on 'Tools', then 'Accounts', which will open up a new mini-window.

In the top right-hand corner of the new mini-window will be a button saying 'Add' which you should click. Click on the add button

A small side window will appear saying 'Mail' 'News' and 'Directory Services', you need to click on 'Mail', (ignoring the other two) which in turn will open an Internet Connection Wizard. The wizard is very easy to follow, except when you get to 'POP' and 'SMTP' settings, which has to be precisely as your ISP has told you. For example with a Virgin account it should read (POP3) pop.virgin.net, and (SMTP) smtp.virgin.net. However, with some other mail accounts like BT, it reads mail.btconnect.com for both settings! The POP3 settings sends out mail while the SMTP settings receives the mail. Complicated isn't it?

All is not lost though! If you sign up for a new e.mail account with any of the major suppliers, they have a facility to enter all the above details for you automatically. I have told you about the above so that you can enter the settings yourself if you ever have to do a resoter on your computer, or something like that.
